The Airless Void
wanted to produce a film in space, and this provided a way to film that without going all the way to space. I used virtual production, projecting the digital world into the real one via Unreal Engine, to achieve this effect. I was able to mimic zero-g by turning the camera around in the edit. I also designed the space suit out of stuff we had. When I realized I needed a control panel for the door, I opened up Blender and made something, animated with the button being pressed.
Everything you see in the background, behind the character, is digital. We filmed in place, with a camera tracker. I had to color correct it to make it match. We had to do some prep and tests to make sure it would all work. Then, on location, there were still problems we had to deal with. Unreal Engine would not work or just crash. In addition, my lead actor had to leave, so I got a double for the hand close up.
The things I did on this shot include directing, Unreal Engine work, iPad UI, writing, editing, color grading, and assembling the 3d models.
